Chapter History

Thirteen ladies from Columbus and Bladen counties realized that the organization of a local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. could play a vital role in the intellectual and cultural development of Columbus and Bladen counties.  Soror LaDeen Powell led the way with her foresight and dedicated efforts in the organization of the Whiteville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The Whiteville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was chartered on February 1, 1986.  Under the leadership and guidance of the South Atlantic Regional Director, Soror Bertha Maxwell Roddey, our charter members realized the ultimate goal and dream of having a local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  The charter members dedicated to the ideals and traditions of Delta were Sorors Argustia Baldwin, Edythe Brown, Synthia Coleman, Mamie Davis, Harriet Gowans (McDowell), Clara Lawrence (Dunn), Permella Lewis, Otelia McAdams, Jackquelyn McDonald (Piggott), LaDeen Powell, Josephine Spaulding (Campbell), Louella Thompson, and Pauline Williams.

Immediately, Whiteville Alumnae began to implement programs and projects with the goal of the sorority's Five Point Programmatic Thrust.  The chapter sponsored its first Jabberwock in 1987 with overwhelming community response and support.  The chapter has worked continuously since 1986 to implement or participate in the following community service programs:  Voter Registration, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, Thanksgiving baskets for needy families, Operation Christmas Child, Breast Cancer Awareness, Delta G.E.M.S. and Delta Academy, Domestic Violence Awareness, and May Week.  The chapter has represented at state meetings, regional conferences, and national conventions.  In 2005 the chapter hosted Area Founders Day East in Whiteville, North Carolina.

We have inherited a rich legacy of leadership, excellence, and empowerment to respond in our communities to an ever changing society.  Past presidents include LaDeen Powell, Synthia Coleman, Barbara Brown, Clara Dunn, Willa D. Williams, Georgann Piggott, Barbara Yates-Lockamy, Sheila Dockery and Sharresa Kelly-Mason.  Immediate Past President is Trina Davis. Our current President Jacqueline Roseboro serves to help us meet each programmatic thrust with "joy in our sisterhood, power in our voice and service in our heart".
